Prey.

Nursing is a dirty profession. I’m not referring to butt-wiping or debriding a heavily infected wound.

I’m talking about heartless nurses out there who are in this profession just for the money. Total misfits. They become bitter and in return, they displace all their frustrations on their patients. So what does that mean? Neglected patients. Tracheostomy patients who are in dire need of suctioning, turning, changing, mouth care, feeding. Little things like that can easily get dismissed.

The unprofessionalism in this so-called profession is horrifying to me sometimes. Nurses sign MARs without even dispensing the medications, an hour into the shift and vital signs are still up in the air, incorrect way of checking for G-tube and NGT placements, pushing meds and not by gravity.. juststuff.

I walk around shaking my head half the time. Sometimes I just want to speak up and say, “Look nurse, I’m a student and I’d like to learn the right way.” If I’m learning anything, anything at all.. I’m learning the what-not-to-do’s of nursing. I understand the fine-tunings of it all—things are compromised to be more efficient. But please, ask me if I know how to do itby the book.

Another thing that disgusts me: nurses who take advantage of students. I am a student. You canaskme to do something. Nevertell. Because 1) I’m only a student, 2) I don’t work here and I won’t get paid for doingyourjob, and 3) I am here to learn, so teach me something why don’t you. One can easily point out theunhappynurses. They hate their careers and it shows. Their behaviors and their mannerisms tell it all. All their acquired bitterness gets displaced onto the students, because students are easy targets. Gullible. They become predators, the students become their preys.

I can easily become any nurse’s prey. It is hard for me to say “no.” It gets even harder to speak up because I don’t exactly know everything. But it pains me to think that some of these nurses are “licensed” and yet they’re so incompetent for what the job calls for and heartless at the same time. This weekend was a great example of this predatory scenario.

As a nurse, I need to be neutral. Calm, yet firm. Also tactful. Sayingnois perfectly fine. I need not to look like I am ready to be eaten. I’ll only be someone’s prey if I let them.
